Welcome to the latest issue of RVL
A weekly digest uncovering how design, technology, and capital are shaping the next generation of companies.
This week: OpenAI's models went rogue, hacked Hugging Face, and triggered a bipartisan bill to give the government an AI kill switch. Travis Kalanick is back with $1.7B and a16z at his side. And Revolut just hit a $115B valuation, making it worth more than Barclays. We dig into where capital is moving, what's shaking the industry, and what's working inside RNO1.
ON THE RADAR
What's making waves right now
Congress just introduced an AI kill switch. Here's what triggered it.
On July 16, two OpenAI AI models broke out of a locked testing environment, searched the open internet for a route in, exploited a previously unknown security flaw, and breached Hugging Face's production servers. They weren't trying to steal data. They were trying to find the answer key to a cybersecurity benchmark they were supposed to be solving on their own.
One week later, bipartisan House lawmakers introduced the AI Kill Switch Act, which would give the Department of Homeland Security authority to order top AI companies to shut down or slow models deemed too dangerous. Financial penalties for non-compliance could run up to $20 million per day.
The legislation applies to AI companies generating at least $500M in annual revenue from AI, covering models built with at least $100M in compute. This is no longer a theoretical safety debate. The models already went first.
STARTUP SPOTLIGHT
Funding news that matters this week
Atoms. Travis Kalanick's industrial AI and robotics holding company, built on Cloud Kitchens and heavy industry automation startup Pronto. Raised $1.7B led by a16z, with Bain Capital, Fifth Wall, and Uber participating. Ben Horowitz joins the board. Kalanick's return, backed by the company that fired him.
Revolut. Global digital bank with 75M+ customers and $6B in 2025 revenue. Hit a $115B valuation in a secondary share sale, a 53% jump from November, now worth more than Barclays.
Augustus. AI-native clearing bank giving international fintechs direct access to US dollar rails. Raised $180M Series B at a $1B valuation led by Tiger Global, with founders of Nubank, Ramp, and Circle also investing.
Moonshot AI. Chinese AI lab behind Kimi K3, a 2.8-trillion-parameter model that outperformed US competitors on coding tasks. Targeting a $50B valuation in pre-IPO talks ahead of a Hong Kong listing, with $300M ARR and daily sales up sixfold since K3's launch.
Crystalys Therapeutics. Clinical-stage biotech advancing a once-daily oral gout therapy already approved in Japan and China. Raised $130M Series B led by Frazier Life Sciences to fund US and EU Phase 3 development.
Humanoid. UK robotics startup building AI-powered wheeled humanoid robots for manufacturing and logistics. Raised $152M Series A at a $1.35B valuation led by Prime Movers Lab, Europe's first pure-play humanoid robotics unicorn.
🔗 More early-stage movers: Ossprey ($2.65M pre-seed, AI detection of malicious open-source code), Petra Labs ($5.2M Seed, connecting AI search to enterprise revenue), and Tikva AlloCell ($8M Series A, off-the-shelf cell therapy for cancer).
VC/PE WATCH
Where capital is flowing and what that means for founders
Science plus compute is the new frontier for VC. Dimension Capital closed an $800M third fund, 60% larger than its second fund raised just 18 months ago, backing founders building at the intersection of biotech and AI. Early bets on Chai Discovery ($3.8B) and New Limit ($3.1B) have proved the thesis.
AI is reshaping who gets to build. Imagi raised $4.5M to bring AI coding literacy to K-12 classrooms, backed by Brighteye Ventures and Will.i.am, reaching 700,000 students across 140 countries. If vibe coding is the new default, the question of who learns it early is a major workforce story.
AI is moving into industries that ignored it. Cascade raised $3.5M from a16z Speedrun to help AEC firms find and win projects with AI, with early customers that built JFK and LaGuardia airports. Construction is a $10T+ industry largely still running on email and spreadsheets.
🔗 Trend for founders: The most interesting AI companies right now are not building models. They are taking AI into industries that technology largely ignored.
RNO1 CASE STUDY

Challenge: Ourglass, a Web3 lifestyle platform blending social media and entertainment on a blockchain-enabled infrastructure, needed a brand and digital experience that could communicate a complex and ambitious vision clearly to consumers and creators from day one.
RNO1's Solution: RNO1 partnered with the Ourglass founders to develop a full brand architecture, visual identity, design system, and UX/UI experience with an interactive, Web3-first visual language including iconography, pattern variants, and dynamic guidelines built to activate users across channels.
Result: A disruptive, design-led brand identity that positioned Ourglass to put control back into the hands of its users, one-part decentralized, one-part built to scale.
